Program Description

Event Details

Dr. Peter Shapinsky, professor at UIS (author of Lords of the Sea: Pirates, Violence, and Commerce in Late Medieval Japan) will explore the ways in which seafarers, labeled pirates, developed control over sea-lanes linking Japan to the rest of the world in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Their history demonstrates the significance of non-state peoples and Asian participants in what we think of as the Age of Exploration.
